Using recycled asphalt shingles in new products is important in order to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the extraction, transportation, and processing of new materials. Most importantlym it also conserves valuable landill space. The use of RAS also reduces costs for manufacturers and consumers. By recycling used asphalt shingles, roofing and construction companies are able to reduce their disposal fees and enhance their public image.
Research has found that using RAS in asphalt can improve the pavements performance by increasing its resistance to wear, moisture, deformation, rutting, and cracking. Although fairly new to the asphalt industry, RAS, if processed and incorporated into the design process correctly, has shown to be beneficial to paving contractors.
